Crooked Car Dealers Jailed For Stealing From Customers

Car dealers sent to jail

With dealers like this, it’s painfully obvious why car dealers have such a bad reputation…

There have been some major court cases related to car dealers recently (like this one we wrote about a few months ago), but this one really takes the cake. A couple of car dealers in Connecticut have pleaded no contest to first degree larceny charges. You’re not going to believe what they did…

They stole over $250,000 from customers – they took payments for cars that they never delivered, they sold the same car to multiple people, and they tried to pull a Steve Miller Band (the old “take the money and run” move). Customers paid for vehicles in cash or checks, and were told they’d have to return to pick up the vehicles. In several cases, they were told repeatedly that the cars weren’t ready, and many of the customers were told to come to the dealership on April 1st to get their money back.

Beware of Clever Auto Dealer “Fake Bill” Scams

Beware of auto dealer email scams

We’ve seen a disturbing trend lately – many of our auto dealers have been receiving email scams, and some of them are pretty cleverly executed. We’ve had a lot of phone calls lately about questionable invoices and bills, and it turns out that several of our dealers have gotten the exact same scam sent to them. We’ve even had several dealers received faxed invoices…

Don’t fall for these scams! If you get a bill or an invoice from a company that you’re not familiar with, PLEASE take the time to look at the invoice and ask a few questions. Have you ever heard of the company? Is the invoice for a service that you signed up for? Is there a contact phone number on the invoice? Does it list the URL of the billing company?

Here are two examples of the scams we’ve seen recently. The one on the left is a faxed “invoice”, and the one on the right is usually delivered as an email attachment.  continue reading..

AutoRevo speaks at State of Search Conference - Dallas

We’re proud to announce that our Director of Search and Social (Greg Gifford) spoke at an SEO and Social Media conference this week to huge accolades! The sell-out conference was held at Cityplace in Dallas, Texas, and Greg presented a session on Local Search Optimization.

Greg writes most of the posts here on our blog, so if you’ve been reading for a while, you know that he’s got a LOT of in-depth knowledge about local search and Google Places. He presented a session called “How to Kick Ass on Google+ Local When You’re All Out Of Bubblegum,” and it was a huge hit. The title is a reference to a movie quote from They Live, a great movie from the 80′s. He referenced 30 different movies in his presentation, including several hilarious movie clips with quotes that related to points in his presentation.

Halloween group costumes from AutoRevo

If you follow our blog, you know that we’ve got a great group of employees, and that we all love to have a good time at the office. We decided to organize a department costume contest to celebrate Halloween this year – so this morning was a blast.

The rules were simple – each department had to come up with a “theme” and do a group costume. Every employee got a single vote to determine the winning department, and no one was allowed to vote for their own department. The prize for first place was free lunch for the department.

Only 4 departments participated (the dev guys were too cool to dress up, and there was only one sales guy here today), and we had some great costumes. So without further ado, here are the costumes:  continue reading..

Dealers fined for fraudulent sales practices

If you haven’t already seen it in the news, several dealerships in New York just got the smackdown from a local judge. The owner of for car dealerships in Bay Ridge New York has been ordered to pay $294,500 back to customers after it was proven that the dealer used deceptive sales tactics.

That’s a pretty big chunk of pocket change! Including civil penalties and costs, the dealerships were ordered to pay $510,000 in total!

New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said the dealerships engaged in  persistent fraudulent, deceptive, and illegal practices in the sale and financing of automobiles. According to authorities, many customers were left with ruined credit reports. He explained:

“The deceptive conduct led consumers to sign contracts which did not reflect the negotiated sale terms, frequently including unwanted aftermarket add-ons. Some of these transactions led to repossessions and ruined credit, as the consumers found themselves owing more than they ever would have knowingly agreed to pay.”

Google’s Ratings Guidelines – LEAKED

Google 2012 Ratings Guidelines

Google provides a handbook to its team of human website raters, and this year’s copy has been leaked to the web. I’m not going to link to the doc here, if you really want to read it for yourself, it’s just a quick Google search away… It’s a 161 page pdf that instructs its team on how to rate websites, and this year’s handbook has a new section that tells reviewers how to rate the quality of the page they’re looking at.

Matt Cutts, the head of Google’s Search Quality team, has insisted on several occasions that the human ratings don’t “directly” affect the results on Google. However, it’s widely suspected that the feedback from Google’s team of human raters plays a big part in tweaking and testing the hundreds of updates to Google’s algorithm that roll out every year.

AutoRevo's new office

We’re finally settled in to our brand spankin’ new office space! We moved in about a month ago, but there were a few small things that were still being worked on… Now we’re all done, and we wanted to share a few photos. We moved just a few miles up the road from our old office, but we’re in a MUCH nicer building – and we had our entire space finished out to our own custom specifications. (We owe a huge “thanks” to Erik and Travis, who spent months of time going over every little detail)

We moved from a boring space that had zero personality to an awesome office with such a good vibe that we’re all excited to come to work every day. We set up an “agile” environment that encourages communication – you’ll notice the lack of cubicles and the open layout. Enjoy the photos, and if you happen to roll through Dallas, come by and visit!

used car dealer responds to assassination plot - hilarious video

We saw this video online last week and just had to share it with everyone… While it’s scary for the guy involved, you can’t help but laugh at how he very calmly says to the FBI that “I’m in the used car business, I could have made a lot of people mad recently…”
